Buspirone:
Buspirone can be to treat short-term anxiety and chronic (long-term) anxiety disorders. It’s not entirely clear how buspirone works, but it’s thought to affect chemicals in the brain, such as serotonin, which regulates mood.
Buspirone may take several weeks to become fully effective. This drug is available as a generic drug under the brand name Buspar.
Antidepressants:
Antidepressants work by affecting neurotransmitters. These medications can used to treat many anxiety symptoms, but it usually takes 4 to 6 weeks for significant effects to occur.
Beta blockers:
Beta blockers are used to treat heart disease. They are also used to relieve physical symptoms of the anxiety, especially in social anxiety disorder.
Your doctor may prescribe a beta blocker such as propranolol (Inderal) which help to reduce your anxiety symptoms especially in stressful situations, such as when attending a party or giving a speech.
Tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs):
TCAs are an older class of antidepressants. Although they may be effective for treating the depression and anxiety, doctors often prescribe SSRIs instead because they can cause fewer side effects.
However, TCAs may be helpful for some people, especially if other medications do not provide relief.
These medications work by hindering the reuptake of serotonin and norepinephrine. This increases the level of these neurotransmitters in the brain.
